Kirjad kunstikogujale / Letters to the Art Collector

Mikkeli muuseumi näitusel „Purjed heisata! Tiit Pruuli kunstikogu“.

  • For Tiit Pruuli, the stories related to the works in his collection are as important as the artworks themselves. This is why he has asked the artists to comment on the meanings of the works and the circumstances in which they were created. Here is a selection of letters sent by the artists to Pruuli, to provide context for the artworks.

Pictures of the Baltic Sea III. 1995
Acrylic and oil on canvas

Tuletorn on see valguse sümbol pimeduses. Maali keskel, üsna märkamatult väikese ruudu sees, on kaks joont, kauge kaja Lapimaa maastikust (näitusel „Jooned ja triibud“ Tallinna Kunstihoone galeriis, 1995), all minu lindmodell kajakas paljude lindude mängupoosis, kael välja sirutatud, tervitamas valgust.

Tiit Pääsuke in his letter to Tiit Pruuli on 25 November 2016

“One possible line of thought:
The painting is made up of several motifs, each of which, in one form or another, has been part of or even the main subject of a previous painting, as is my habit.

Light and darkness are what the painting is really about. The lighthouse is a symbol of light in the darkness. In the centre of the painting, hardly noticeable within a small square, there are two lines, a distant echo of the landscape of Lapland (the exhibition Lines and Stripes at the Art Hall Gallery in Tallinn, 1995), whereas the lower section of the painting shows my ‘bird model’ – a seagull – greeting the light with its neck stretched out, the courtship position for many birds. Here I enjoyed the process of painting to the full: a soft grey on the left side, then the shining lightness of the bird, then the graphic lines, drawn in charcoal, and then the deep blue darkness with some red glow in the middle. A bold and ragged broad brushstroke cuts in from the left, and all of this on top of my typical ‘daub’ of colours. A dance around the light. I now realise that in 1994, I had just returned to Estonia from Lapland, where I had suffered from depression caused by winter darkness for several years. In 1995, the light and darkness business was obviously still itching…

However, there is another, more worldly explanation:
Lighthouses are phallic symbols, like all towers, and the white bird – a woman – gracefully craning her neck before nightfall…
One picture, several interpretations.”

Saskia Järve kirjas Tiit Pruulile 20. juulil 2017

  • Tekst ilmunud ka Saskia Järve näituse „Mälu kaob II“ kataloogis (2017), tekstid koostanud Saskia Järve ja Siim Preiman, tõlkinud Martin Rünk

„Töö valmis minu näituse „Mälu kaob II“ raames, mis toimus Tallinna Linnagaleriis 2017. aasta alguses. Näitust läbivaks teemaks oli mälestuste moondumine kollektiivses mälus. /—/
Parvlaeva Estonia hukk 1994. aasta septembris on kõikide Läänemere regiooni elanike mällu jäädvustunud ühe lähiajaloo suurima tragöödiana. Ligi 900 inimelu nõudnud katastroofi mäletatakse aga igal pool erinevalt. Et hukkunute hulgas oli kõige enam rootslasi, leidus meie läänenaabrite juures hulganisti neid, kelle arvates olid õnnetuses süüdi laeva viletsalt hooldanud Eesti laevamehaanikud. Saksa ajakirjaniku Jutta Rabe vandenõumaigulisest versioonist, mille järgi Estonial veeti salaja relvi, sealhulgas lõhkeaineid, mis põhjustasid väidetava hukatusliku plahvatuse laeva autotekil, on vändatud B-kategooria triller „Balti torm“.

Saskia Järve in her letter to Tiit Pruuli on 20 July 2017

  • This text was also published in the catalogue of Saskia Järve’s exhibition Memory Fades II (2017). Text: Saskia Järve and Siim Preiman, translation: Martin Rünk

“I created this painting for my exhibition Memory Fades II at the Tallinn City Gallery in early 2017. The central theme of the exhibition was the distortion of collective memories. /—/
The sinking of the MS Estonia in September 1994 is engraved in the memories of everybody in the Baltic Sea region as one of the biggest tragedies of the recent past. The catastrophe, which claimed almost 900 lives, is remembered differently in different places. As most casualties were Swedish, many in Sweden believed that unprofessional Estonian ship mechanics were to blame for the accident. The conspiracy theory advocated by the German journalist Jutta Rabe that the MS Estonia was used to smuggle weapons and explosives resulting in an explosion on the car deck inspired the low-budget thriller Baltic Storm. The reception of the film (and the fallout of the tragedy in general) varies significantly according to the physical distance of the viewer from the Baltic Sea and their personal contact with the tragic event.”

After the Storm. 1984
Oil on canvas

Aili Vint kirjas Tiit Pruulile, aprill 2022

„Mulle helistas legendaarne Mere Mees Tiit Pruuli ise!
/—/
Sina, Tiit, oled Mere turjal teinud tiiru ümber maakera. Mina olen maalinud Merd kodurannas, miile ja miile, kuni silmapiirini välja. Ja nüüd tahad teada, kuidas too meremaal sündis.
Hea uudis Sulle! Spontaanses loomistuhinas teeb kunstnik kõige vahetumat ja ausamat kunsti. Just nii sündiski mereportree „Pärast tormi“.“

Aili Vint in her letter to Tiit Pruuli in April 2022

“I got a phone call from Tiit Pruuli, the legendary Sea Man! He said that when they had reached the Atlantic on their round-the-world voyage, he had told his companions that this was like Aili Vint’s Sea, and that once he got home, he would buy a Sea from Aili.
/—/
Tiit, you have let the Sea carry you around the world. I have painted the Sea on my home beach, miles and miles of it, all the way up to the horizon. Yet being at Sea is still not enough for you. You love the Sea so much that you even take it home with you. And now you want to know how this seascape was born.
I must confess that I, too, am hopelessly in love with the Sea. How can one portray one’s secret love? You can barely capture it for a brief moment, get a glimpse of its mood, and the next moment it is gone.
I do not have any recollection of painting this Sea. This means that I must have been painting feverishly, with utmost passion. This, however, should be good news for you, as it is in this state of feverish creativity that artists create their most spontaneous and honest works. This is how After the Storm was born.”

August Künnapu (1978)

Oktoober. 2018
Akrüül, lõuend

October. 2018
Acrylic on canvas

August Künnapu kirjas Tiit Pruulile ja Kadri Asmerile, 7. aprillil 2023

„Tiit Pruuli tellis minult kord jahisõiduainelise maali.

August Künnapu in his letter to Tiit Pruuli and Kadri Asmer on 7 April 2023

“Tiit Pruuli once commissioned me to do a painting on the theme of yachting. As I did not have much first-hand experience of watercraft, Tiit arranged a trip on a fairly large yacht to Naissaare island. Also, on one crisp and windy, but sunny October morning, Tiit, his wife Maris, his friend Jaanus Nõgisto and I took a smaller yacht out to Pirita Bay. This painting was based on these two experiences. In the picture, the edge of Tiit’s jacket is aligned with the horizon, calming the dynamics of the active scene and introducing an aspect of timelessness.”

Ilmar Kruusamäe (1957)

Läbi punase mere. 1989
Õli, lõuend

Through the Red Sea. 1989
Oil on canvas

Ilmar Kruusamäe in his letter to Tiit Pruuli on 30 August 2022

“In 1989 I made several oil paintings in predominantly red colours.
For me it was an apocalyptic year, as early in the year I had noticed the revolutionary number combination:
1917 + 6 × 12 = 1989
The red sea depicted in the painting resembles the flag of the Estonian SSR. A white ship – a symbol of freedom – with free wind blowing in its sails, moves swiftly through the red sea. In the distance, a white sail-boat is about to enter free waters. Just as the flag had a five-pointed star in the upper left-hand corner, the painting shows a yellow star with two points still above water, but sinking fast. The road to freedom runs through the red sea in the north and the west directions…”

Regatta. 2018–2019
Oil on linen canvas

Veiko Klemmer kirjas Tiit Pruulile 30. jaanuaril 2023

„2012. aasta paiku avastasin enda jaoks abstraktse kunsti tinglikkuse võlu.

Veiko Klemmer in his letter to Tiit Pruuli on 30 January 2023

“In about 2012, I discovered for myself the beauty of abstract art. I was particularly fascinated with how a few seemingly random shapes and surfaces create a sense of space. As I do not particularly like to repeat myself as an artist – I find a piece exciting only if it involves experimenting and discovery – I tried to move back towards realism, taking a break from the generalisation and randomness of pure form, and to see if abstract stylisation and realistic material can be combined in some way.
Another theme running through my work has been social satire revolving around the human inability to come to terms with one’s ideals. Perhaps I read the ’wrong’ books as a child, but I would like to believe that we are capable of something better than what we see in the media every day. The futuristic boats with wing sails navigating the waves of life: are they moving towards an apocalyptic sunset or speeding away from the burning world? This is for the viewer to decide.”

Bright June. Ere meel. Ere taevas. Bright Mind. Bright Sky. 2021
Oil on canvas

Sest kõrgemalt on mere serva paremini näha. Mulle tundus, et pean saama kätte õige tooni.
Ja see toon oli selgelt lillakas. Kui taevas ise oli soe kaadmiumkollane. Need on värvidena ühed suurimad vastandid. Värv on tugev sümbol.

“It was a hot day in June (around 20 June). So hot, in fact, that the evening twilight was filled with a warm glow.
On such hot evenings, the sea shimmers in such a way that it changes the glow of the twilight. Sometimes it feels as if the sea and the sky become one. Yet the sea sends flashes into the sky. And the city – the same old city – shines with a beautiful light.
I walked up a few flights of stairs that evening. From the higher floors you can see the edge of the sea better. I felt I had to get the right shade.
And the shade was clearly purple. The sky itself was a warm cadmium yellow. Distinctly opposite colours, and to me they felt like opposites over the city that evening. Colour is powerfully symbolic. It speaks and communicates and offers solutions. On this evening, not only the colours but also everything around me seemed warm.”

Frozen Sea in Umber. Tonight’s Dark Autumn And Winter Time Touched My Soul Deeply.
The End of November Has Always Been My Favourite Time. 2021
Oil on canvas

„Vahel novembris on kõik värvid justkui üks. Aga see on ainult esmapilgul nii. Kui süveneda, võib näha väga kirevat skaalat. See maal on maalitud viimastel novembri päevadel.
Vaikselt hakkas linna kohale tulema hoopis teistsugune mere toon. Ja kõik sai justkui selgeks. Selgeks sai ka see eelviimane näitusele valmiv maal. /—/“

“Sometimes in November, all the colours seem to merge into one. But only at first glance. If you look closely, you can see a very colourful spectrum. This painting was made during the last days of November, a short time before the opening of an exhibition. It took a while to wait for the right moment at the end of November. I was waiting for the umber and the bright cadmium red to meet, because I have always thought that these colours should not really be together. These shades are visually jarring, and yet they have a very natural and necessary effect.
At the end of November, the frost fell, and brought a new brightness to the sky. Little by little, a quite different shade of the sea began to settle over the city. And suddenly everything – including this painting – became clear. /—/”

Seitsmes laine. 2016

Seventh Wave. 2016
Oil on canvas

Sirje Petersen kirjas Kadri Asmerile 3. jaanuaril 2023

Sirje Petersen in her letter to Kadri Asmer on 3 January 2023

“The elements of nature – storm, wind, water and fire – have always been a means of visual expression for me. I employ the movement and change in nature directly in the dynamics of the visual language of painting.
For me, the sea is a surreal motif in depicting mental, emotional, physical and spiritual journeys. The sea conveys strength and passion at one moment, and peace and balance at another.
By rendering the sea with its millions of views, I also render the complexity of being human.
The contrasts and spontaneity in nature are what interest and fascinate me.
Nothing depends on humans.”

Mall Nukke (1964)

Veneetsia. 2016

Venice. 2016
Oil on canvas

Mall Nukke kirjas Tiit Pruulile 24. novembril 2016

„Foto, mille järgi see teos valmis, on pildistatud 2013. aasta suvel Veneetsia biennaali ajal.

Mall Nukke in her letter to Tiit Pruuli on 24 November 2016

“The photo from which the painting was made was taken during the Venice Biennale in the summer of 2013. The weather was hot and the canals endless. The colours were meant to express this warm and exuberant Italian summer, with stones radiating the sun’s energy.
This is an illusion of a disappearing city that sinks a few centimetres every year.
To paraphrase a Biblical phrase, adapted for this painting: from water you were taken, and to water you shall return.
This painting depicts the ephemeral nature of seemingly solid things, such as historic stone houses, canals and the human culture.”

Meremeeste saadetud postkaardid ehk sõnumid kodustele

  • Tegelikult on Tiit Pruulil kaks kogu: kunstikollektsiooniga sama tähtsal kohal on tema jaoks merendusteemaliste postkaartide kogu. Näitusel on eksponeeritud kollaaž kogusse kuuluvatest postkaartidest. Nende killukeste kaudu kõnelevad meiega möödunud aegade meremehed, nende kodused ja sõbrad. Käsikirjaliste kaartide lugemise hõlbustamiseks on tekst siin välja toodud ka trükituna (kirjaviis muutmata).
  • In addition to his art collection, Pruuli takes pride in his collection of maritime postcards. The exhibition includes a collage of these postcards. Through these fragmentary messages, we hear voices from the past of sailors and their loved ones.
